Topic: MEDIA BIAS POLICIES AGAINST IMMIGRANTS AND PEOPLE OF DIFFERENT RACIAL ORIGIN AND THE DETECTION OF METHODS TO COUNTER THEM

The event will take place on Friday, December 12, 2025 at 6 p.m. in the “George Anastasopoulos” room of ESIEA on the 3rd floor (Akadimias 20, Athens)

Section A (18.00 – 19.30) :

Title:

“The extent and seriousness of the phenomenon of distorted presentation of immigrants and people of different racial origin by the media”

Coordinated by Mr. Haris Athanasiadis, Professor of Public History at the Department of Political Science and History at Panteion University

 

SPEECHES:

1) Collection and analysis of experiences at the national level regarding the determination of the existence of stereotypes by the media” (Speaker: Ms. Vasso Karzis, Lawyer and Scientific Associate of “ANTIGONE”)

2) “The role of the media in creating a negative image of immigrants and people of different racial origin” (speaker: Ms. Elena Koutroumpa, Lawyer and Special Scientist at the Greek Ombudsman)

3) “How the media shape the image that society has of refugees and immigrants” (Speaker: Mr. Rafiq Abdeen, journalist at the radio station “Sto Kokkino 105.5”).
4) “Stereotypical depictions of immigrants and persons of different racial origin by the media” (Speaker: Ms. Vodiona Voda, member of the Network of Young Persons of Migrant Origin “HORIZONS” and sociologist specializing in human rights and democratization).

“Display of proposals and solutions that will contribute to the radical improvement of the image of immigrants and persons with different origin in the media”

Coordinated by Ms Nelli Kampouri, Assistant Professor at the Department of Social Anthropology at Panteion University.

1)“Media narratives about immigrants: how are they created, what consequences do they have” (Speaker: Mr. Giorgos Pleios, Professor at the Department of Communication and Media of the University of Athens and Director of the Social Research Laboratory at the National University of Athens)

2) “The main challenges and priorities in the effort to combat the biased portrayal of immigrants and people of different racial origin by the media” (Speaker: Ms. Andla Shashati, Director of the “Greek Migrants Forum”)

3) “Detecting fluid racism in the public discourse of the media” (Speaker: Mr. Argyris Archakis, Professor of Discourse Analysis and Sociolinguistics, Scientific Manager of the TRACE Project)

4) The role of militant and evidence-based journalism in addressing misinformation regarding immigrants and people of different racial origins” (Speaker: Ms. Danae Maragoudaki, journalist at the independent and alternative journalistic non-profit organization “Solomon”, member of the journalistic group “The Manifold” and the film group “Paola Team Documentaries”).
