Youth cultivating for their rights “Thessaloniki European Youth Capital 2014”

Young people of Thessaloniki participate in the thematic week titled “Youth cultivating for their rights” that is organised by ANTIGONE in collaboration with “Thessaloniki-European Youth Capital 2014”. The aim of the action is to discuss the interrelation between environmental protection and human rights as well as set the basis for a democratic society built on the principles of solidarity and equality. Furthermore, youth participate in a two-day gardening workshop for the sensitisation of the citizens of Thessaloniki and the promotion of their environmental conscience

“Thessaloniki European Youth Capital 2014”

 

Young people of Thessaloniki participate in the thematic week titled “Youth cultivating for their rights” that is organised by ANTIGONE in collaboration with “Thessaloniki-European Youth Capital 2014”. The aim of the action is to discuss the interrelation between environmental protection and human rights as well as set the basis for a democratic society built on the principles of solidarity and equality. Furthermore, youth participate in a two-day gardening workshop for the sensitisation of the citizens of Thessaloniki and the promotion of their environmental conscience.

 

Objectives:

Through their participation in experiential activities, young people are given the opportunity to realise the importance of the protection of the environment for human life and also be motivated for the sensitisation of the society towards the general issue of human rights in relation to the environmental sustainability.

 

In particular, the objectives of the action are the following:

  • Sensitisation of youth towards the development of a democratic and a sustainable society
  • Awareness raising of youth on human rights and environmental protection issues
  • Acquaintance of youth with urban planting and growing methods for herbs and vegetables
  • Participation of youth in an awareness raising initiative for the sensitisation of the citizens of Thessaloniki on the importance of the environmental protection to the quality of human life
  • The reinforcement of the feeling of common responsibility towards the protection of the environment and the public space
  • The undertaking of collective initiatives, as for example the creation of a public seed bank that constitutes one of the thematic week activities

 

Target groups

Direct

The action mainly addresses young people aged from 18 to 35 years old as for example:

  • NGO and CSO volunteers
  • Teachers and educators of children and youth
  • Professionals of relevant sectors that work with children and youth
  • Young people aged from 18-35 years old that are interested in participating in activities in the fields of human rights and social ecology

Indirect

The citizens of Thessaloniki that are going to be approached during the two-day workshop on planting that is going to be organised by the young participants in a green space in the center of the city.

 

Activities

During the thematic week, five 4-hour workshops on environmental protection and human rights are going to be organised and implemented with the participation of 20-25 young people of Thessaloniki. During this first circle of workshops, the participants, working as a group, will get acquainted with third generation human rights and also realise the importance and their interrelated roles.

 

The thematic sections of the workshops are the following:

  • Environment and right to life
  • Right to water and right to food
  • Poverty and environment
  • Activities for the society and the environment

 

The last two days of the thematic week, young people are going to participate in a workshop on gardening during which they will plant vegetables and herbs in a public space in the city center that will be assigned by the Municipality of Thessaloniki.

This two-day workshop can become a significant occasion for the awareness raising and the sensitisation of the citizens of Thessaloniki on environmental and human rights issues.

 

Duration

The thematic week “Youth cultivating for their rights” is going to be implemented from May 26th until June 1st 2014.
