LAGADIKIA REFUGEE CAMP AND SINDOS SHELTER FOR UNACCOMPANIED MINORS Educational art project for refugee adolescents
The project is realised in the prefecture of Thessaloniki (Lagadikia camp and Sindos shelter for unaccompanied minors) with the participation of refugee adolescents. Through the involvement in the educational activity proposed, young participants will enjoy and interact in a positive environment of collaboration and free expression, fill their long, pending time with inspiration and creation and learn to work together in terms of democracy and respect, getting organized in their group and offering help to each other.
Project objectives
The project consists an effort to promote human rights, equality and non-discrimination between children and youth not only between the participant groups but also between different social groups. Activities aim to raise equal participation without discrimination in social life as well as to prevent and reduce incidents of violence and exclusion between children and teenagers.
To be more specific, the objectives of the project are the following:
- Participant adolescents to become acquainted with the universal principles and rights brought under the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and develop democratic conceptions and attitudes in their everyday lives.
- Participants to develop personal and social skills expressing their creativity not through an individual and passive way but through full and active participation in a friendly, pleasant environment of cooperative learning, freedom of expression and artistic evolution.
- Learn to peacefully work together in terms of tolerance to the difference, equality and collaboration in an open and non-judgmental way.
- Express their creativity in a therapeutic process and realize their own potential.
- Raise awareness by fostering their voice, their hopes and their dreams for the future through their comic stories that will be broadly disseminated to peers and adults in various languages.
Target Groups
Adolescents living at Lagadikia refugee camps and at ARSIS Shelter for unaccompanied minors in Sindos.
Project Activities
During the project, refugee participants currently living at the refugee camp of Lagadikia, will participate in non-formal education workshops on human rights related issues as well as in workshops for the creation of their own comic stories on the thematic sections discussed.
With the completion of the workshops conducted, 10 stories in 5 thematic sections will have been developed by the participant adolescents. As the final product of the project, the 10 stories created by the group will be developed and printed in one comic book that will then be translated in the native languages of the participants.
The 5 thematic sections of the action will be:
- Rights of the Child
- Human Rights (with a special emphasis on freedom of religion)
- Xenophobia / Racism
- Gender Equality
- Disability and Rights
Project duration
The project is implemented from 10.10.16 until 31.12.16.

“Comics in Human Rights Education” project is implemented by ANTIGONE and AddART.
ANTIGONE: “ANTIGONE-Information and Documentation Centre on Racism, Ecology, Peace and Non Violence” is a non-profit organisation headquartered in Thessaloniki that since 1993 develops activities on human rights field.
ANTIGONE’s goal is a) to ensure equal opportunities and equal treatment for all without any discrimination on the basis of sex, race, national origin, social/economic/educational level, disability, age, religious beliefs, sexual orientation etc. and b) to raise awareness and sensitisation on the issues of discrimination, social exclusion, fundamental rights, social ecology, peace and non-violence.
AddART: AddART is a non-profit organisation working on the promotion of culture. It was launched on February 2014 and has its main offices in Thessaloniki.
The main goal of AddART is the promotion of culture as well as the creation of original artistic work with social messages to the wide audience. To accomplish its objectives, AddART organises various cultural and social activities such as events and festivals on visual, audiovisual and digital arts. Furthermore, addART realises educational workshops for students and adults willing to create and get acquainted to specific arts, combining creation with social sensitivity. Furthermore, AddART organises presentations and exhibitions of art works that are produced through its projects with the aim to reach the broader dissemination possible as well as accomplish the best promotion of messages related to the significance of cultural creation.
